Futures contract

Part of the theme Derivatives and contracts.

Definition

A futures contract is a standardized legal agreement to buy or sell a set quantity of an underlying asset at a predetermined price on a specified future date.

It is an obligation for both parties unless closed early, and it is standardized by the exchange. Because its value comes from the underlying, a futures contract is a derivative.
