Perpetual contract

Part of the theme Derivatives and contracts.

Definition

A perpetual contract, or perpetual swap, is a futures-style contract with no expiry date, so it can be held indefinitely.

With no expiry to pull its price toward spot, it uses a funding rate and a mark price system to stay anchored to the underlying. Perpetuals are the dominant instrument in crypto derivatives.
