Derivative

Part of the theme Derivatives and contracts.

Definition

A derivative is a contract whose value is derived from an underlying asset rather than the asset itself.

You hold an agreement whose payoff depends on the underlying's price, which lets you use leverage, hedge, or profit from falling prices without owning the asset. Futures and perpetual contracts are the derivatives covered by the Foundation courses.
