Clearing house

Part of the theme Market mechanics and orders.

Definition

A clearing house, or central counterparty, sits between buyer and seller and guarantees that each side's obligations are met.

It manages counterparty risk by collecting margin and marking positions to market, which is why exchange-traded futures require ongoing margin. It is the reason a futures trade does not depend on the other party staying solvent.
