Basis

Part of the theme Derivatives and contracts.

Definition

Basis is the difference between a futures price and the current spot price of the underlying.

For financial futures it largely reflects the cost of carry and shrinks toward zero as expiry approaches, because at expiry the future must equal the spot it settles against.

Formula / example: Basis = futures price - spot price
