Stock index

Part of the theme Market mechanics and orders.

Definition

A stock index is a number that tracks the combined value of a defined basket of stocks, such as a broad market of 500 large companies.

It is a common underlying for cash-settled futures and a standard generic example of a traded market. You cannot hold an index directly, only instruments that track it.
