Prices of bitcoin increase as larger traders take control.
According to Dow Jones Market Data's end-of-day trading prices, bitcoin has gained around 51% from its November low, which was caused by the demise of the crypto exchange FTX.
Changing trading dynamics indicate a withdrawal of ordinary investors from a market formerly dominated by these amateur buyers and sellers. The power is shifting to entities such as hedge funds.
It is common practice to speculate on the future of cryptocurrencies using Bitcoin, the largest digital token by market capitalization and the oldest.
According to Markus Thielen, head of research at Matrixport, a crypto lending and trading platform, US investors in particular appear to be driving the current purchasing.
Mr. Thielen cited statistics indicating that the latest crypto surge has occurred mostly during U.S. trading hours and that the majority of the gains have occurred after the release of U.S. inflation data on January 12.
Mr. Goh reported that his company categorized more than 45% of its trading flows from clients as retail in 2018, up from 34% so far in 2023.
Despite the market upheaval of the last year, believers insist digital currencies are still a good bet, and some even compare them to gold and other safe-haven assets.
Many people, including the CEO of JPMorgan, Jamie Dimon, and high-ranking officials at the European Central Bank, are skeptical of bitcoin because they believe it is purely a speculative instrument and does not have the practical applications of a commodity or the income-generating capacity of more conventional financial assets like stocks and real estate.
However, bitcoin continues to persist in the face of several challenges.
Since the beginning of 2018, the crypto industry has been in a state of crisis, with the implosion of the Terra stablecoin, the failure of numerous institutions, such as the hedge fund manager Three Arrows Capital, the lending platforms Celsius Network LLC and Genesis Global Holdco LLC, and the bankruptcy filing by Sam Bankman-FTX Fried's empire in November.
Additionally, Bitcoin is still a long way from its all-time high of around $67,000, which means that investors who bought close to that high are still significantly in the red. This record high was set in late 2021.
Christopher Bendiksen, head of bitcoin research at asset management CoinShares, stated, "I don't believe FTX would scare out in the slightest anyone who knows the core investment case of bitcoin."
Mr. Bendiksen reported $26.6 million in January flows into CoinShares' BITC bitcoin exchange-traded instrument, ranking it third most on record.
Some large investors, like as hedge funds, have bet against bitcoin and are now purchasing to cover their positions, according to Ilan Solot, co-head of digital assets at London-based financial firm Marex Solutions.
Mr. Solot also said that structured solutions built on digital assets were in very high demand. These are sophisticated investments, including "autocallables," that are intended to protect investors against short-term volatility.
Since the beginning of the year, Mr. Solot added, "we have seen a significant spike in interest in digital assets on our desk."
