Normal distribution

Part of the theme Volatility and statistics.

Definition

A normal distribution is a symmetric bell-shaped probability curve often used to model returns, where most outcomes cluster near the mean.

It is a useful simplification, but real market returns have fatter tails, meaning extreme moves happen more often than a normal curve predicts. Never assume large moves are impossible just because they are rare on the curve.
