Initial margin

Part of the theme Leverage, margin and liquidation.

Definition

Initial margin is the amount required to open a leveraged position.

It is the inverse of leverage: at 10x you post 10 percent of notional, at 100x just 1 percent. Higher leverage lowers the deposit but shrinks the buffer before trouble.

Formula / example: Initial margin = notional / leverage
